Slovak-Polish project in the framework International Science and Technology Co-operation
Name:
The possibilities of (re)use of mine wastes and minimisation of their influence on the environment
Duration:
01/2004-12/2006
(Co) Investigator:  Assoc. Prof. Dipl. Ing. Maria KUSNIEROVA, PhD.
Results:
The proposed project is intended to study and to develop new technology of (re)use of mine waste products, to exchange industrial experience between the partners and to disseminate knowledge about application of best available techniques (BAT) in mining. The results of the work will allow an assessment of the technical and economic viability and environmental impact of mentioned activities.

Advanced carbon materials on the base of Slovak raw materials for sustainable development
Duration:
01/2004-12/2006
(Co) Investigator:  Visiting Assoc. Prof. Ludmila TURCANIOVA, PhD.
Results:
The significant results of basic and application research were obtained in the framework of the project. It was confirmed the occurrence of two biological activated kauranes in coal extracts and fullerenes from the pyrolytic soot. Also, there were found a patentable knowledge about concentration of biological activated humic acids (HAs) in the mechanical activated coals as a formation of the nanosizes amorphous carbon from the TG measurements. It was confirmed, that the kaurane derivates were not found in the valuated biomass and curative plants. The experimental results of mechanical activated brown coal substantiate the GACL (Grinding Aqueous Caustic Leaching) process and dry activated grinding for the application with co-operation Huminit Slovakia, s.r.o. In the conditions of mechanical treatment, there was found a multiple increase of HAs content in coal for application possibility as additive of feed animals.

The Study of the Effect of Residues after Mining Activity and Raw Material Processing on the Contamination of Water Streams, Water Reservoirs, Lakes and Air in the Catchment Areas of the selected Rivers by Heavy Metals
Duration:
01/2004-12/2006
(Co) Investigator:  Dipl. Jan BREHUV, PhD.
Results:
The environmental factors namely water, sediment load of streams and water reservoirs, soil and atmosphere were investigated in frame of project aims by progressive analytical methods such as AAS, RTG, SEM and EDAX. An amount of contaminants in samples of mentioned components of environment near the old and present-day mining loads (sludge basins, outflows of mining waters, heaps etc.) was fixed. On the basic of these results we determined decisive sources of pollution by heavy metals, solid and gaseous components from atmosphere and the other harmful substances in observed factors of environment. The portion of anthropogenic activity for atmosphere, on contamination of the surroundings from the point sources in the areas of Jelsava - Lubeník and Nizná Slaná was determined. The influence of municipal activities and long-range transport of contaminants was determined. As to the assessment of the sources of contamination can be ranked as follows: industrial sphere including of old mining loads, municipal sphere, natural background and long-range transport of harmful substances.

Arsenic decontamination from water resources
Duration:
07/2004-07/2006
(Co) Investigator:  Dipl. Ing. Stefan JAKABSKY, PhD.
Results:
Iron-oxides-based nanosorbents were prepared (akaganeite). Subsequently, their sorption capacity directed at arsenic was tested. The sorption tests were realised in batch experiments in solutions with various ionic strength, namely 0, 0.1 and 0.01 M NaNO3 at pH 3.5 - 4. Initial arsenic concentration was in the range of 20 - 1000 mg.L-1. Sorption isotherms were plotted by application of Langmuir and Freudlich models. Experiments showed, that the highest sorption capacity of akaganeite attains in NaNO3-free solution (3 publications in abstracts proceedings).
