| Name: | Coal and coal waste processing for application in environment and energy sector |
| Duration: | 01/2002-12/2004 |
| (Co) Investigator: | Assoc. Prof. Dipl. Ing. Ludmila TURCANIOVA, PhD. |
| Results: | The physical models for biomass ramming, humic products preparation at mechanochemical activation of brown coal as well as for hard coal- and coke-based nanoproducts preparation were elaborated. The identification of humic acids in biomass and the enhancement of recovery at mechanical activation are original knowledge. |

| Name: | Development, testing and application of magnetic sorbents for removal of heavy metals from wastewater and soils |
| Duration: | 01/2002-12/2004 |
| (Co) Investigator: | Prof. Pangiotis Misaelides (Dipl. Ing. Stefan JAKABSKY, PhD.) |
| Results: | In the frame of study on the affinity of heavy metals cations to iron oxides the sorption capacities of natural magnetite, synthetic magnetite, magnetic fraction of ash from coal-fired power plant EVO-1, magnetite-bearing so called Albanian leaching residuum after nickel production and hematite-bearing red mud from Al2O3 production were determined at Zn2+ removal. In the above mentioned order of given materials the sorption capacities for Zn2+ are as follows: 30 mg.g-1, 56 mg.g-1, 22 mg.g-1, 42 mg.g-1 and 133 mg.g-1. |

| Results: | The first step for understanding of biogeochemical factors controlling the global circle of carbon and the changes of climate is to understand backward binding of weathering mechanism of silicate rocks. Microbial degradation of silicate rocks in the presence of organic compounds exhibits, in the dependence on temperature, many times stronger (higher) biodegradation and biotransformation of silicate minerals to clay minerals with iron admixtures in natural weathering processes. These minerals are transported together with microorganisms into Lake Baikal and there is written like in a book the climatic changes on our continents at various carbon dioxide concentrations. The exchange of glacial and interglacial periods in geological periods is not any peculiarity and it is possible to deduce the development of Earth climate in future on the basis of study of many factors including also bioformation of clay minerals in sediments of Lake Baikal. |
