| Duration: | 01/2002-12/2004 |
| (Co) Investigator: | Prof. Dr. Peter BALAZ, DSc. |
| Results: | The research was concentrated on the study of mechanical activation and mechanochemical reduction of various mineral systems. The most promissing result is a verification of possibility to synthesize nanocrystalline sulphides in industrial mills. |

| Name: | Study of environmental biological catalysis of mine drainage acidification and mineralization in old mine biotype after exploitation of sulphide ores |
| Duration: | 01/2002-12/2004 |
| (Co) Investigator: | Dipl. Ing. Alena LUPTAKOVA, PhD. |
| Results: | The research is focused on the monitoring of presence of chemolithotrophic acidophilic bacteria Acidithiobacillus and Leptospirillum in acid mine drainage form flooded Slovak sulphidic ore deposits. The positive isolation results of aforementioned bacteria was demonstrated in 22 habitats. Next stage of the research is focused on the study of the mine waters exploitation as the metal unconventional raw by application of sulphate-reducing bacteria species Desulfovibrio. Experimental results confirm the reality of this chemical-biological method for the elimination of heavy metals from waters, (1 monograph published abroad, 1 publication in CC journal, 1 publication in NCC journals, 24 publications in proceedings). |

| Name: | Biotechnology in treatment of non-metallics and waste waters |
| Duration: | 01/2002-12/2004 |
| (Co) Investigator: | Dipl. Ing. Iveta STYRIAKOVA, PhD. |
| Results: | The results obtained during project duration are in context with planed purposes to find an economical and ecological way of non-metallics processing and waste waters with metals content. We directed in the first stage to the investigation of the effect of silicate bacteria isolated from kaolin deposits on removal of unrequested admixtures of Fe and micas from kaolins, quartz sands, feldspars and zeolites under laboratory conditions. We evaluated the factors (pH, redox potential, temperature, concentration of biogenic and nutrition substances) which affected bacterial acitivity during quality improvement of non-metallics. There was given an evidence about ability of bacteria and their metabolites to destroy high-resistant aluminosilicate mineral - mica by leaching of separate mica grains by bacteria of Bacillus and Thiobacillus species. Moreover, we performed the experiments directed to the ability of bacteria of Bacillus species to remove intergranular mineral forms of iron in silicate matrix. There was ascertained the presence of various mineral forms of Fe3+ (bound in micas and free Fe3+ in iron oxyhydroxides) which affect the rapidity of quality improvement of non-metallics by bio-chemical leaching (4 publications in CC journals, 4 publications in non-CC journals, 5 publications in proceedings). |

| Duration: | 01/2002-12/2004 |
| (Co) Investigator: | Dipl. Ing. Stefan JAKABSKY, PhD. |
| Results: | The technique for removal of sub-micron particles and oil products from water was elaborated through a modification of their magnetic properties by suitable ferrofluids. The modification of magnetic properties of materials is based on the adsorption of ferrofluids on the hydrophobic surfaces. An amount of 1.2 . 10-10 kg of ferrofluid with a magnetic susceptibility of 0.5 SI units is needed to add for an enhancement of magnetic susceptibility of grain with a diameter of 100 μm by two orders. |

| Name: | Study of causes of occurence, movement of transformation and effect of heavy metals, minerals and other harmful components of industrial, municipal and natural aerosols on the selected territories of former and present mining activity |
| Duration: | 01/2002-12/2004 |
| (Co) Investigator: | Visiting Assoc. Prof. Dr. Milan BOBRO, PhD. |
| Results: | The content of projekt was the study of contamination of environmets by influence of anhtropogenic industrial activities of the mining. For atmosphere following the improved metodes of determination of the dust fallout by the sedimentation and aspiration metodes were utilized. The obtained results enabled to evaluate the occurrence of heavy metals in other components of environment and its possible influence by the atmosphere especially. There were found out that in the area of the sole iron-ore plant – Siderit s.r.o. Nižná Slaná, mainly the solid particles in very close surrounding falling out is very intense. The content of the magnesium in dust fallout, in the region with magnesite plants is under limit its obviously decrease in soils maximum 3 km a long way off source in the most burden direction. The contamination of soils by the magnesium continue (prosecuting) owing to older loads. |
