| Name: | Characterization of fractal structures in mineralurgy and geotechnics |
| Duration: | 01/2000-12/2002 |
| (Co) Investigator: | Dr. Annamaria MOCKOVCIAKOVA, PhD. |
| Results: | The project was aimed at characterization of fractal structures being the
part of processes of mineralurgy, as well as fractal configurations
connected with processes of rock disintegration. Application of fractal
geometry enabled to describe the fractal surfaces of pulverized sulphidic
minerals and particles of coal entering to further treatment processes by
fractal dimension. The fractal dimension has been used for prediction of
values of energy density consumed for fracturing processes, needed to
generate a new fractal surface. At the study of damaged microstructure of
reacting section of rocks executed to the loading tests it was shown that
the fractal dimension could give information about the degree of disordering
of materials.

| Name: | Mechano-chemical methods of preparation of the products from natural precursors |
| Duration: | 01/1999-12/2001 |
| (Co) Investigator: | Prof. Dr. Peter BALAZ, DSc. |
| Results: | The research into mechanical activation of CuPbZn complex sulphide concentrate of Slovak origin have been performed. The physico-chemical transformations of the concentrate due to mechanical activation have influence on the rate of extraction and the recovery of gold by using ammonium thiosulphate in the solution of Cu2+ inos. It is possible to achieve the 90% recovery of gold in leach even in few minutes in the case of mechanically activated samples while the recovery of only 54% was obtained in 120 min under equal conditions in the case of as received concentrate. The mechanochemical pretreatment proved to be a very effective method of processing of sulphide concentrates before extraction of precious metals into leach liquor. |

| Results: | The study on the diffusion of magnetic fluids into oil products and the determination of magnetic as well as the other parameters of formed weakly magnetic mixture (ferrofluid - oil product) results in the optimisation of added ferrofluid consumption and the method of water purification was worked out.
The methods of non-conventional polycomponent magnetic sorbents preparation were elaborated and the laboratory tests on magnetic filtration of contaminated waters have been carried out. On the basis of theoretical calculations and experiments a suitable magnetic filtration device was designed for the removal of heavy metals ions from wastewater. The parameters of magnetic filtration were also optimised.
