Strážky - part of the Spišská Belá town. In the
15th century a very rich Warkotsch family moved there and a gothic manor
house was built for them on the ruins of a templar monastery. In the 16th
century the Stansith family rebuilt the house in the renaissance style
- an important humanist school was housed here at those times. In the 1862
the baron Eduard Mednyánsky moved to Strážky, whose son,
Ladislav
became later a known painter - his paintings have been exposed in the manor house
museum. In 1970 the manor house was declared the National Cultural Monument
- it's one of the nicest renaissance buildings in Slovakia. There is also a
beautiful park by the building, which was built in the 19th century.
The museum contains several expositions - of history, crafts, furniture and
Ladislav Mednyánsky's paintings, the Humanistic library is also a
part of the exposition.
In Strážky just opposite the manor house stays the Gothic St. Anna's
church from the 15th century. Its interior contains valuable wall paintings
from the 16th century and three Gothic altars probably made in the
Levoča workshop. In 1629 a renaissance belfry was built next to the
church.
