Levoča is undoubtedly one of the most attractive towns of Spiš. For the
first time it was mentioned in 1249 (as Leucha), later in 1271 as the main
seat of the Spiš Saxon's Community; in 1323 it became a Free Royal
Town. Very important for Levoča was the right of store - every trader had
to stay in the town for a few days to sell the goods. Levoxičca was also known through
an amount of crafts; in the 15th century also the famous Master Paul's
workshopi worked here - its most known work is the highest Gothic altar in the world (18.62m) located in the St. Jacob's church in Levoča (National Cultural Monument).
Next to the church there is the building of the former town hall belonging to the
best works of the renaissance architecture in Slovakia (nowadays the seat of museum). Other
historical monuments are: cage of shame, classicistic evangelical church, an amount of noteworthy burghers' houses, Minorites' monastery, Gymnasial church
and the Holy Ghost church with with a beautiful Baroque interior. Over the town
there is the Marianska hora mountain with the Virgin Maria's church -
known place of pilgrimage.
